Do you feel chronically tired due to restless sleep? Or do you grind your teeth and snore at night? If so, it can be difficult to pin down what is causing these occurrences as well as frustrating since the negative effects of a lack of sleep build up over time. In many cases, we at MidTown Dental Care in Wauwatosa have found these unpleasant experiences can be addressed through Obstructive Sleep Apnea treatment.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder that involves breathing disruptions. This disorder is caused by intermittent relaxation of the throat muscles, which can lead to blockage of the upper airways. This intermittent blockage causes a person’s breathing to repeatedly stop and start again during sleep. Due to the dangers of breath cessation, this disorder can be quite serious.

You may not know if you are suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea unless you know what signs to look out for. There are many Obstructive Sleep apnea symptoms, including excessive snoring, headaches, frequent daytime fatigue, increased anxiety or depression, irritability, memory loss, high blood pressure, and even gastric reflux. Additionally, as a result of fatigue and sleep loss, people suffering from sleep apnea often develop a reliance on sleep aids.

Diagnosis & Treatment

At MidTown Dental Care, we will conduct your initial consultation and provide you with a Home Sleep Test (HST). The HST is sent to a sleep physician, who reads and interprets the data that was taken during your night’s sleep. Our team will then review the results of the test to determine if you would benefit from an oral sleep appliance.

Generally, the treatment options will be between a CPAP machine and an Oral Sleep Appliance, with the latter option being the most common. An Oral Sleep Appliance is a device you wear in your mouth while sleeping to bring your jaw forward and open up your airway. The opening of the airway leads to better, less obstructed sleep and can alleviate many symptoms described above.

Once we have determined that you will likely benefit from this device, we will construct one specially to fit your mouth comfortably. Usually, it takes about a month from review of your initial Home Sleep Test to provide you with your Oral Sleep Appliance.

A+ all around. I needed a new dentist, but I kept putting it off. Tooth began hurting, so I couldn't put it off any longer. I called and they got me in the next day. The staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and I felt like I was in great hands. My new home for all things teeth, cleanings, and unfortunately a tooth extraction!

I would like to give a shout out to the dental care team at Mid-Town Dental. For a person who has always since childhood had a negative relationship to the dentist, and very recently due to auto mobile accident (which serval of my teeth were shattered) a few years back, have a had more aversion to this profession. I was floored by the warmth, professionalism, and care I received from the whole staff and especially Becca, who took care of me a majority of the time. They have given me a renewed point of view on the dentist office and I look forward to continuing my care there.

MidTown Dental (and Dr Laura Russell) did an incredible job of treating my daughter following a sports injury which required immediate treatment and impacted several teeth, including one tooth that came out during the injury. Everyone at the office was so responsive, compassionate, and helpful. In addition, they helped us find a highly regarded oral surgeon in short order. I’ve always been pleased with MidTown Dental during regular cleanings and care for my family, but after this emergency treatment, I am beyond impressed. THANK YOU to everyone at MidTown and especially Dr Laura Russell. I highly, highly recommend MidTown.
